  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons plain flour
  • 250ml milk
  • 70g cooked, cubed chicken breast
  • 70g cooked and cubed ham
  • 80g cooked pasta or noodles
  • 4 tablespoons chopped celery
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 90g grated Cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon paprika

  1. Preheat oven to 200 C / Gas 6.
  2. Melt butter in a large saucepan over low heat. Stir in the flour and heat until bubbly. Slowly add the milk, stirring constantly, until mixture is thickened and smooth.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in the chicken, ham, pasta or noodles, celery, salt and ground black pepper. Transfer this mixture to a casserole dish.
  4. Bake at 200 C / Gas 6 for 15 minutes. Remove from oven, sprinkle with the cheese and top with paprika, as desired. Return to oven and bake for 5 to 10 minutes, or until cheese is bubbly.

Lovely simple recipe for a quick easy dinner!! I used a left over bacon joint,which gave a lovely flavour, some mushrooms and a bit of cabbage. I also added a spoon full of Dijon mustard to the sauce. Very tasty, this will now be on the menu in our household. Thanks for sharing!!-02 Dec 2012

Delicious and simple to make. I used to make something very similar when I was a student, but I lost the recipe some years ago, so this really brought back some fond memories.I did make one or two small changes though. Firstly, I didn't put any celery in it. Because that seems a bit weird. Much better to just serve it with some steamed veg I thought.I also altered the quantity of butter and flour a bit, adding half as much again. I did that because my sauce was fairly watery at first, which I suspect is the result of my only having semi-skimmed milk at home. That might be worth considering if anyone else is using semi or skimmed milk.Those minor things aside, I loved this, and will make it again.-23 Nov 2012


Recipe Summary

  • 4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 6 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices cooked ham
  • ½ cup seasoned bread crumbs

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Coat a 7x11 inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.

Pound chicken breasts to 1/4 inch thickness.

Sprinkle each piece of chicken on both sides with salt and pepper. Place 1 cheese slice and 1 ham slice on top of each breast. Roll up each breast, and secure with a toothpick. Place in baking dish, and sprinkle chicken evenly with bread crumbs.

Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until chicken is no longer pink. Remove from oven, and place 1/2 cheese slice on top of each breast. Return to oven for 3 to 5 minutes, or until cheese has melted. Remove toothpicks, and serve immediately.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Lightly grease a medium baking dish.

Bring a saucepan of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook egg noodles in boiling water for 6 to 8 minutes, or until al dente. Drain.

Melt butter in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Mix in flour, heating until bubbly. Slowly whisk in milk. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring constantly, or until thick and smooth. Remove the saucepan from heat. Mix in the noodles, chicken, ham, celery, salt, and pepper. Spoon the mixture into the prepared baking dish.

Bake for 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Sprinkle with cheese and paprika, and continue baking for another 5 minutes. Serve hot!


Do you cook pasta before baking in a pasta bake?

It’s always best to cook pasta in fresh boiling water and then drain before adding to a pasta sauce to make a pasta bake. This prevents the sauce from becoming too thick and means you can gauge the consistency of the sauce more easily.

There are ‘One Pan’ pasta dishes, like my One Pan Spaghetti but they have a much wetter sauce to account for the starch for the pasta in the sauce.

Ham and Cheese Pasta Bake

I love all day slow cooker meals, the ones where you toss all the ingredients in the crock pot in the morning and then dinner is ready when you come home. But every now and then I need something quick. This recipe is perfect for those nights when you need to toss something together and then run to dance or basketball practice and come home with a house full of hungry people. All the ingredients are basically pre-cooked so all you need to do is warm them all up.

Ham and Cheese Pasta Bake

This recipe could be made on the stove, in the oven or as the recipes card shows in the crock pot. If you are making on the stove cook the noodles according to package directions. The reason for cooking the pasta al dente when using the slow cooker is because the pasta will continue to cook in the crock pot.

Half-and-half is a mixture of cream and milk. If you don’t have half-and-half you could use milk but I would recommend whole or 2%.

If you wanted to make this more of a complete meal you could add peas the last 30 minutes of cooking or serve with a salad. I used packaged cubed ham but you could also use leftover ham or a ham steak.

It was a tasty recipe but a lot of work for the final product.

looks great, but where's the parmesan.

I served this for the first time for a graduation lunch. Yes, i live on the edge. but, it was a hit. simple to prepare for small or larger gatherings. I used marinated grilled chicken and it was amazing.

This is an excellent dish to make with chicken or grilled MahiMahi

We enjoyed the flavors of this chicken dish. The chicken stayed moist which is always a plus. I added mushrooms to the sauteed tomatoes for another layer of flavor. Am I missing something? Why is this called Parmesan when there is no Parmesan in the ingredients? I sprinkled some on the pasta just to make it legit.

This dish is excellent and has a great flavor. I would wait and add the ham and cheese until the last few minutes of cooking time, though, because the cheese had almost melted completely off by the time the meat thermometer registered that the chicken was done.

Excellent! I used 1/2 Italian bread crumbs and 1/2 Italian Panko crumbs. The tomatoes are WONDERFUL and can be used with many other recipes!

loved it my husband is not a big chicken fan but he stated this meal needs to be on the menu at least once a week! very easy to make and fast as well.

I work for a large fire department in Texas. I've recently been transferred to a new station and it was my turn to cook. We were so busy all day but I still managed to put this on the table in an hour (along with all my sides). I also served a mixture of zucchini/yellow squash with a can of Rotel added, oh, and a side of corn. Literally, As soon as they took one bite we had another call to go on. One of the guys thought it ws so good that he took it and ate in the back of the fire engine! They all loved it and it helped me with being accepted, atleast they know can cook. I will cook this again for sure!
